From Research to Concept
This project began with a simple question: why do many Gen Z adults feel disconnected from nightlife when they choose not to drink?
Our early research explored how pressure, social anxiety, and a lack of inclusive spaces affect those experiences.
We learned that people did not want another event app. They wanted motivation and confidence in their choices.
That insight led to Gobi, a gamified wellness companion that helps users build awareness, track habits, and celebrate small wins.
Meet Gobi
Gobi is a small goblin who represents growth and change.
We chose a goblin because they are usually seen as stubborn or chaotic, which makes their transformation more meaningful.
As users complete challenges, Gobi evolves with them, turning something mischievous into something mindful.
It is a playful reminder that even the most unlikely characters can grow.
Visual Identity
We wanted Gobi to feel playful and friendly while maintaining structure and focus. The palette mixes purples and greens to represent balance and progress, while pixel-art visuals bring in a nostalgic sense of fun. The typography was kept clean and approachable with Poppins for easy readability.
Testing and Feedback
After usability testing, we organized participant feedback into an affinity map to identify key themes and opportunities. This process revealed that users valued motivation, clarity, and emotional tone over tracking alone. They wanted Gobi to feel positive and supportive, not corrective. These findings guided final adjustments to flow, copy, and animation timing.
Prototype Flows
Gobi’s prototype was designed as six connected flows that guide users through the full experience — from setup and customization to reflection and discovery. Each flow highlights a different part of the journey, showing how Gobi balances functionality with personality while keeping every step intuitive and motivating.
A simple, friendly flow that welcomes users, then guides them to register or log in quickly to start their Gobi journey.
This flow gathers key information about the user’s habits, goals, and motivations to personalize their challenge setup and track progress effectively.
This flow lets users check in on their mood and write daily reflections. Each entry earns GobiCoins and reinforces mindful progress tracking within the app.
This flow visualizes user data like time saved, money saved, and health metrics. It turns progress into motivation through simple charts and friendly feedback from Gobi, helping users see tangible results from their habits.
This flow lets users customize their goblin character using GobCoins earned through challenges. Personalizing Gobi’s outfit adds fun and self-expression, helping users connect emotionally with their progress and stay motivated.
This flow celebrates user milestones and promotes real-world connection. Achievements reward consistency with GobCoins, while the Events page helps users discover sober social activities, blending motivation with community and fun.
Final Thoughts & Takeaways
Gobi turns mindful drinking into a story of growth. This project taught me how design thinking goes beyond visuals by focusing on discovering meaning through research and iteration. It strengthened my collaboration skills, visual design abilities, and appreciation for using playfulness as a design motivator. In the future, Gobi could expand to include wearable data or community-based challenges that make reflection even more interactive.
